Hello! I recently fully moved back to DW from LJ, so I figured I should start doing my 101 in 1001 updates here as well. (Previously I was posting on [livejournal.com profile] mission101.)

Anyway, I'm on my fourth list, with less than a year to go now and less than 1/10 of my goals completed. Time to start working harder on them! I know there's not been much activity on this comm in awhile, but I hope there are some ppl still hanging around. It's always nice to see other ppl working on their lists and be able to encourage each other :)

List
Started: May 5, 2019
End: January 30, 2022

In progress:
32. Finish five unfinished TV series (1/5)
I caught up on Killing Eve, which I'd been putting off for some reason even though I enjoy it a lot.
42. Have 1,000,000 words posted on AO3 (545k/1,000k)
94. Have $500 in investments (428/500)

Completed:
73. Complete 20 Duolingo Spanish lessons (20/20)
I managed to start up a pretty good language lesson habit since the beginning of the year! I've got a 33 day streak on Spanish I believe, which is far longer than I've managed before.

Failed:
76. Do a genealogy recording session with each grandparent (1/3)
One of my grandmothers passed at the end of January, and unfortunately I never made it around to doing a recording session with her.

Total completed: 10
Total failed: 1

My personal challenge for this year was to do two things a month from my list, and over the last six months I've apparently actually managed that! Admittedly half of them acutally happened during September as I frantically ran around trying to finish off nearly done challenges and grabbing a couple of pieces of low hanging fruit. While I only managed 40 things from the list this time round I did in fact end up with a considerably less challenges unstarted. Normally I end up with a third done and about 50% unstarted whereas my unstarted was more like 25% this year. (Though it actually looks more like 33% because I admitted to my failures in a couple of places and apparently they don't count seperately but move themselves back from 'in progress' to 'not started'.) So I guess I was better at picking things that I was actually keen to do rather than thought I 'ought' to do. I certainly had lots of adventures in the process both completing challenges and trying and failing so that was definitely worthwhile. (For example I completely failed at the monthly sound recording sessions but having it on the list made me remember to take my sound recorder places so I have a collection of recordings from all sorts of places I wouldn't otherwise.)

As always coming to the end of these lists is a good way of taking stock over how my life and priorities have changed over the last couple of years. Last time I did this one of my challenges was to find a new job which I achieved fairly early on but which involved moving to a new town so completely unended my life and my priorities - this time I had 'save up enough for a deposit on a flat which took me longer but having bought a flat at the start of the year my priorities and achievements have all revolved around that.

I'm not going to start a new list until the new year, I want to give my next set of ideas more thought and planning this time round. Also there's a few of my 'nearly done items' that I think that I might actually be able to finish by the end of the year without a hard deadline hanging over me. We'll see.

So, it's that time again, my Day Zero list is coming near to it's deadline (the end of this month) and it's time to take stock and decide what I can and can't finish and focus my energies on doing those before the deadline. I also think I'm doing to have a break from doing the challenge for a few months, start a new one in January again. I really struggled to come up with 101 things for this latest go round and I think that worked against me. One of the pleasures of doing this challenge is the way it highlights how my priorities change over the period of a list, and possibly never more so than this time. I guess now that my life has settled into a more stable position - both professionally and personally - it's a good time to look at my wider more long term aspirations. Now that I've got to where I wanted to be, where do I want to go next. I suspect my next go round at this list will be far more '5 year plan' stuff than any of my previous lists.

(First time: 34 done - 55 not started, second time: 36 done - 48 not started, Third time: so far 32 done - 38 not started, which I guess is actually better, even if I didn't finish massively more things this go round I definitely 'tried' more things, some of them just didn't work out.)

More importantly I've got 30 items 'in progress'. So many things that I started and didn't finish - story of my life tbh and half the reason I do these challenges - and while some of them I've no chance of finishing in the remaining time, quite a few of them are nearly done. A bit of concerted effort and I could get them finished off. I reckon, if I put my mind to it, I could finish 10 of them this month.

Nearly finished list

  1. Go to 25 gigs (23/25)
  2. Don't eat anything fried for a month (Making a 2nd attempt this month)
  3. See 26 films I've never seen starting with each letter of the alphabet (22/26)
  4. Listen to a new artist every month (easy listen to someone new this month and I'm done)
  5. Learn to roll sushi (working my way through a book)
  6. Read more books than I buy over the course of the challenge - (as long as I buy no books this month I've suceeded!)
  7. Listen to 5 radio/audio drama serieses (3/5 - there must be some short stuff on BBC Sounds!)
  8. complete a big cross-stitch project (The Flower Fairy cross-stitch is nearly done!)
  9. Read the rest of my Gaelic comics (3x Asterix the Gaul? Surely that's doable)
  10. Finish 10 craft projects that are lingering about half-finished (8/10)

Realistically, I can also finish the 'Listen To The Observer’s 50 Albums That Changed Music' because it's always been the whole writing them up thing that's held me up on that front, so actually listening to them is pretty easy. There's another couple of things that are on the unstarted list that might get done if the opportunity arrises (such as the climbing wall and the dolphin spotting) or if I have time (I have a beginners origami kit and I could easily order a bow-tie off Amazon, I've a colleague who taught me to fold a pocket square and would gladly teach me to tie said bow tie).

Additionally there's no way I'm getting to 50 on the 50_books_poc challenge but I could get to 40, and while I'm not going to get completely caught up on WTNV I reckon I could get the backlog back down to under a year behind.

I was chuffed with myself at the end of last month, two more items finished and able to be knocked off the list and then I realised that they were the only two things I'd actually finished all quarter. *sigh* However, progress is being made on other things, slow and steady, but progress nonetheless. I'm still trying to focus on finishing the started things and not getting distracted by other shiny things. In my defense, one of the things on my list that I marked off near the end of last year was saving up a deposit for a flat, and this quarter I did in fact buy a flat so everything else has been on hold while that happened. Adulting! *jazz hands*

(Only six months left!!!! Can I make it to half the things?!)

Whoops! I completely missed posting at the end of January/beginning of February so this is actually two months progress - but I've only got a little less than 4 months left now so I'm beginning to look at the remaining goals and think 'I'm unlikely to get that one finished between now and the end of the 1001 days' but I'm also trying to stay positive and think about how much closer to completing the remaining goals I could get.

I had such good intentions in September but...yeah no. I only managed two things this quarter, one of which was literally by the skin of my teeth in the last couple of days - though the other one had been a long term project finally coming to fruition. I'm currently at that frustrating stage with a lot of the things on my list sitting at half or three quarters done. So really I need to focus on finishing those things because if I could just finish all my 'in progress' items I'd have a respectable total. I guess that should be my target for 2019, finishing all the started things.

Summer is most definitely over here, so I guess that means it's high time to make my quarterly update post! I didn't get as many things finished as I'd hoped to, but I've been making steady progress on several of my ongoing tasks so hopefully next update will see more progression. I'm now at the point where I've essentially got a year left of this challenge, so I probably need to have a good re-assessment and focus my efforts on things I can actually finish before then. My best result from all my lists so far has been 36 things done. At my current rate of progress I should be able to get to 40 with realative ease. (I finished 14 things during 2017, so far this year I've finished 10, another 4 in the next quarter would keep me on track for the same.) Can I make it to 50? Half the things? *rolls sleeves up* Let's do this thing.

Although, honestly, it has been cheerful summer here for the last fortnight. The weather has been glorious. (We have a joke here that summer in Scotland is a fortnight in June, but this year it appears to be a fortnight in May instead.) I've managed to finish another 4 things since my last update and another couple are so close to being done! I've been trying to get two things a month done this year with varied success, but I do seem to have started two things a month since my last update so hopefully progress will continue. With any luck, the sunshine will continue and I can get some more of my outdoor challenges done, or at least more books read as the uptick in sunshine these last couple of months has led to me reading substantially more books...
